Voter ID

Starting this year, you will need to take photo ID with you when you go to vote at a polling station.

This requirement has been introduced as a means to minimise the risk of electoral fraud.

You only need one form of ID, but it must be the original version. There are many different identity documents you can use, but most people will be able to use one of these:

  • Passport issued by the UK, any of the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, a British Overseas Territory, an EEA state or a Commonwealth country
  • Driving licence issued by the UK, any of the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, or an EEA state (this includes a provisional driving licence)
  • Identity card bearing the Proof of Age Standards Scheme hologram (a PASS card)
  • Older Person's Bus Pass (or equivalent from Scotland or Wales)
  • Disabled Person's Bus Pass (or equivalent from Scotland or Wales)

For a full list of the acceptable documents, please see the Electoral Commison website.

If you don't have photo ID, you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate. The deadline for applying is 5pm on 25th April.
